Welcome
Shanghai Surprise
I’ve seen the future and it’s Shanghai. Well, to tell you the truth, that depends on which way you are looking.
What was once a fishing village only 20 years ago, is a now a veritable melting pot where East meets West, a clash of the titans that takes you from the past to the future and back again – all in a blink of an eye.
My favourite area has to be the Bund with its old world charm, a nod to past with neo-classical and art deco buildings and top rated restaurants like M on the Bund and Mint. After dinner continue your world fusion experience - just a block away are the coolest jazz clubs in town where you can sit and unwind your woes away.

Had enough of the past? Look across the Huangpu River and behold the new world – a futuristic skyline headlined by the iconic Oriental Pearl TV Tower. Then head on down to one of the highest bars in the world- Cloud 9 on the 87th floor of the Grand Hyatt. The bar showcases Shanghai in all its panoramic glory, a feast for the eyes of archi-tourists and connoisseurs of kitsch alike.
Time to sleep. The Puli is a new hotel that suits the psyche of the Aussie mind – combining a contemporary look with local cultural touches and the convenience of free internet access and mini bar treats.
Shanghai is the city to go and glimpse the future while still seeing the past. Why not see Shanghai before it fully realises its mission to become a modern metropolis, and maybe, just maybe, lose its current quirky charm.
